My Shoulder Feels Weak

My Shoulder Feels Weak

Feeling of weakness when lifting objects or raising arms is a main symptom of rotator cuff injury. Need to distinguish whether you can’t use strength due to pain, or if actual muscle strength has declined.

Causes of Weakness

Unable to Use Strength Due to Pain (Most Common)

Can’t apply strength because it hurts, or body has learned to avoid that movement after prolonged pain. Structurally nothing is wrong, so strength returns once pain is treated.

Structural Problems (Tear, Nerve Damage)

Muscle itself has weakened due to tendon tear or nerve compression. Treatment direction must be determined after accurate diagnosis.

When Structural Problems Are Suspected

  • Rotator cuff tear: Cannot apply strength to affected muscle when tendon is torn.
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome: Nerve compression can cause weakness throughout entire arm.
  • Cervical radiculopathy: Nerve compression from cervical disc reduces shoulder/arm strength.

Most Cases Are Not Structural Abnormalities

Many cases of weakness feeling are avoidance reactions from prolonged pain. If examination shows no abnormalities, Circulation Therapy can help.

Rapidly Progressive Weakness Is an Emergency

If strength suddenly drops rapidly or quickly worsens, immediate medical attention is needed.

Circulation Therapy Restores Strength

  • Circulation HD: Releases compressed nerves and reduces inflammation.
  • Circulation PT: Selectively strengthens weakened muscles.
