How Is Lymph Circulation Related to Swelling?
Lymph circulation returns excess fluid from the tissues to the bloodstream, and problems with this flow can contribute to swelling. We look at your pain and movement alongside any swelling. After an assessment, we may recommend Circulation HD, Circulation PT or a Circulation Combo if it suits your condition. You can book an assessment online.
What Does Lymph Circulation Do?
Lymphatic vessels collect excess fluid and proteins from the spaces between tissues and return them to the bloodstream. Contractions within the vessels and movement of nearby tissues help move this fluid. Lymph circulation is one part of understanding swelling.
Swelling does not always mean a lymphatic problem. Vein, heart or kidney conditions and medicines can also contribute, so the cause needs to be assessed.
How Might Lymph Circulation Relate to Pain?
Swelling and changes in movement can occur alongside pain. Researchers have proposed that changes in lymph drainage may contribute to some chronic pain conditions, but this remains a hypothesis. Lymph flow alone cannot explain every kind of pain.
When we say that treatment helps “wash away inflammatory substances,” we are using an analogy to explain the tissue environment. It does not mean an injection has been shown to send those substances directly through the lymphatic vessels.
That is why we ask when swelling occurs, which movements hurt and whether you have started to avoid certain movements.
How Do We Choose a Treatment?
There is a sequence to regaining movement. We bring the swelling down. We wake the muscles up. We make the movement stick. We assess your pain and movement before deciding which steps you need.
Circulation HD
An ultrasound guided injection places saline around the treatment area to create space between adhered tissues. It is used in the stage that aims to bring swelling and pain down. We decide whether it fits after an assessment.
Learn About Circulation HDCirculation PT
A therapist assesses your movement with you and guides exercises for the muscles and movements you need. The aim is to wake the muscles up and make the new movement stick.
Learn About Circulation PTCirculation Combo
Circulation HD and Circulation PT can be provided in the same visit. We decide whether you need both after an assessment.
Book an AppointmentFrequently Asked Questions
Does poor lymph circulation always cause swelling?
No. Swelling can also be related to vein, heart or kidney conditions or to medicines. The area affected, timing and accompanying symptoms help guide an assessment of the cause.
Is poor lymph circulation the cause of pain?
Researchers have proposed that changes in lymph flow may contribute to some chronic pain conditions. Pain has many possible causes, so we do not diagnose it from lymph flow alone.
How does this clinic assess lymph circulation concerns?
We assess the pattern of pain and swelling alongside your movement. After an assessment, we decide whether Circulation HD, Circulation PT or a Circulation Combo is appropriate. If you need specialist lymphedema care, we advise you on seeking that care.
When Does Swelling Need Prompt Medical Attention?
If one leg suddenly becomes swollen and painful, red or hot, seek prompt medical assessment for causes such as a blood clot or infection. If you have shortness of breath or chest pain, seek emergency care. New or persistent swelling after cancer treatment also needs an assessment suited to its cause.
Are Swelling and Pain Both Bothering You?
We can assess your pain and movement and discuss a treatment plan. Longstanding stiffness may take time to address. You do not have to rush the process.
